Uruguay hosted the inaugural Soccer Worldcup in 1930 and went on to win it. They shocked the world as they continued their triumphant series at their second appearance in the 1950 World Cup, after missing the previous two tournaments due to political reasons. These memories of grandeur for the Uruguay soccer team are fast fading though as their Soccer Worldcup performance continues to remain somewhat dismal.
With that said, coach Oscar Tabarez and his team are set on changing their image at the South Africa Worldcup Football 2010. They certainly have top quality assets and the necessary resilience to forge ahead and achieve this.
The Champion Soccer Worldcup Players
The Uruguay soccer squad captained by Diego Lugano, has a mix of young players as well as veterans. Worthy of mention is the powerful duo, Diego Forlan (top goal scorer with 7 goals) and Luis Suarez (with most appearances for Uruguay soccer), both possessing the talent required to take the team beyond the first round, for the first time in 20 years.
Uruguay Soccer Leadership
Oscar Tabarez was born on March 3, 1947 in Montevideo, Uruguay. El Maestro, as he is referred to as, began coaching in 1980 after an exceptional career as defender for multiple clubs as well as representing Argentina and Mexico. Tabarez was appointed Uruguay soccer coach in 1988, and 2 years later led the Uruguayan team to the second round at the Soccer Worldcup tournament in Italy.
Thereafter, Tabarez went on to coach world-class clubs in Argentina as well as Europe, before being reunited with the Uruguay soccer team in 2006. As Oscar Tabarez enters his third decade as a coach, he gets ready for his second FIFA Soccer Worldcup finals appearance with Uruguay, with hopes to relive their initial Soccer Worldcup years.
