Despite only having been represented at four FIFA Soccer Wordcup showcases, the Portugal soccer team has shown some impressive talent over the past decade, boasting two semi-final appearances.
Portugal football is certainly graced with some impactful players, yet speculation is rife that coach, Queiroz, is a hindrance their performance rather than a benefit.
Nonetheless, with top quality players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe and Simão, the Portugal soccer team aims to improve upon their results and change their lack of a Soccer Worldcup victory, at the South Africa Worldcup 2010 in June.
The Champion Soccer Worldcup Player
The 2008 FIFA World Player of the Year, Cristiano Ronaldo, is under grand expectations from his fans especially, to set the greatest soccer showpiece on earth, alight at the South Africa Worldcup 2010. Whilst the Real Madrid superstar failed to get the ball in the nets during his seven appearances, Ronaldo is renowned for his capability to face challenges and is definitely a player to keep an eye on at South Africa Worldcup 2010.
Other Portugal football players to watch include the aggressive Bruno, steadfast Ricardo Carvalho and the expert midfield duo Deco and Simão (top goal scorer with 4 goals). With Pepe’s knee injury it’s dubious as to whether he will be available to play at the South Africa Worldcup 2010 tournament.
Portugal Football Leadership
Born on March 1, 1953 in Nampula, Mozambique, Carlos Queiroz started his coaching career for the Portugal U20′s team. He then went on to coach the likes of United Arab Emirates and South Africa, leading the South African team to the finals at the 2002 Korea / Japan World Cup finals. However, after a disagreement with the South African Football Association, he chose to resign from the post. In 2002 he was appointed as Sir Alex Ferguson’s assistant at Manchester United, where he had great success. It was then in 2003 that he was surprisingly given the coaching role at Real Madrid, but this turned out to be very short term, before returning to Manchester United.
Queiroz then took the reigns from Luiz Felipe Scolari after EURO 2008, his second spell as the Portugal soccer team coach. He last coached the squad from 1991 to 1993 and produced a substandard performance, failing to lead the Portugal football team to either EURO 1992 or the 1994 USA FIFA World Cup.
As a past coach to the South African national team, Carlos Queiroz’s familiarity with South Africa may prove to be extremely beneficial for Portugal at the South Africa Worldcup 2010. With a miraculous recovery, Queiroz knows that much is expected of him and his highly talented team at South Africa Worldcup 2010.
Portugal FIFA Soccer Worldcup Achievements
- The Portugal soccer team’s best Soccer Worldcup performance was their debut game in 1966, where they finished in third-place.
- At the same event Eusebio walked away with a Golden Boot Award.
- 2006 Germany Soccer Worldcup was a clear distinction for the Portuguese soccer team, almost achieving their 1966 result, but just missing it with a fourth place after being defeated by Germany.
- South Africa Worldcup 2010 is Portugal’s fifth FIFA Soccer Worldcup appearance.
